The Black Point Inn: a classic oceanfront resort at its best
Even a leisurely dinner feels like a getaway at the Black Point Inn, a classic and historic oceanfront resort.
This landmark on Prouts Neck is just outside Portland, Maine but feels worlds away. It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on three sides in a landscape that inspired paintings by Winslow Homer. His family cottage is just down the road.
The cottage and studio from which Homer painted for 25 years are now owned by the Portland Museum of Art. Roads in this area are private; guided tours originate at the museum on selected dates. Guests of the Inn can enjoy the Prouts Neck Cliff Walk and experience the scenery Homer immortalized.
The Black Point Inn dates to 1878, when it was a summer resort known Southgate House. It was later sold to the Sprague family, who built guest cottages for rail barons. The Oak Room became a speakeasy after Prohibition.
Ownership changed but propriety remained the norm. In 1969, even as the country underwent a cultural revolution, two men were asked to leave the cocktail lounge because they were wearing short sleeved shirts after 5:30 p. m. They were the governors of Rhode Island and Connecticut.
The Inn is now owned by the Migis Hotel Group and known for unpretentious hospitality and impeccable service along with its Old World charm. The oceanfront resort has been renovated to include modern comforts and amenities like complimentary wifi and flat screen televisions in the guest rooms.
However, those who enter the lobby can still smell the aromas of the wood-burning fireplace and the fresh flowers. Intimate seating areas are are filled with antiques, many restored furnishings from the original Inn.
Breakfast is included with a stay at the Black Point Inn. The Modified American Plan includes both breakfast and dinner.
There are two restaurants, both with ocean views, that serve cuisine made from fresh local products. The more casual Chart Room is a place to enjoy pub-style food with a Maine twist.
The Point is a destination for fine dining with crisp white tablecloths and beautifully presented dinners featuring unique local flavors.
Both Black Point Inn restaurants are open to the public. Reservations are advised.
