In Meiringen, Switzerland, history and legends come right from the oven
During our Untours apartment stay in the heart of Switzerland, we noted banners strung across the streets attesting to Meiringen‘s claim to being the birthplace of meringues.
Bakery Frutal, run by the Frutiger family, sells a variety of the egg white and sugar confection, including a chocolate one with a chewy center. More about the area’s history and legends is revealed through the bakery’s tasty treats.
Decorative meringues featuring Sherlock Holmes refer to Meiringen’s honorary citizen.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle came to Meiringen in search of a location for Holmes to meet his demise and found it at Reichenbach Falls.
The Sherlock Holmes Museum, with its backdrop of the thundering falls, opened in 1991 in the old English church on the 100th anniversary of Holmes’ presumed death.
The bakery has an unusual creature emerging from its facade. Long, scaly creatures known as tatzelwurms are said to have been sighted several times in the Swiss Alps over the past few centuries.
A tastier version, tatzelwurm cakes, are sold alongside many other tempting treats.
